The Stifel Financial Corporation is a US financial services provider with an affiliated investment bank and is based in St. Louis , Missouri. The first predecessor company of Stifel Financial was founded in 1890 as Altheimer & Rawlings Investment Company by Benjamin Altheimer and Edward Rawlings. The later namesake Herman Stifel joined the company in 1897, Henry Nicolaus and his son Louis worked for Altheimer & Rawlings from 1910. The company renamed Stifel Investment Company in 1917 and again in 1923 in Stifel, Nicolaus Investment Company .
In 1983 the company went public and since 1987 Stifel's shares have been listed on the NYSE . As of 2000, several competitors in the field of asset management and investment banking were taken over, including Miller Buckfire & Co. , Thomas Weisel Partners and the European MainFirst Bank AG .
The Stifel Nicolaus & Company and Stifel Nicolaus Europe Limited are active with a total of five offices in Switzerland.
