history

Founded as a school and educational institute for the blind, the non-profit foundation developed into a place of learning, living and working, in which blind and visually impaired people worked, among other things, as weavers, brush makers and basket makers. Today the foundation presents itself as a modern center with training opportunities that are unique in Germany.

In 1837 the Institute for the Blind was founded as a school and educational institute for the blind by the Frankfurt am Main Polytechnic Society . In order to protect it from the Nazi regime, it was converted into a foundation with its own legal personality in 1940. During the Second World War , all buildings were destroyed in the air raids on Frankfurt am Main and the asylum for the blind was evacuated to Schloss Dehrn an der Lahn. It was not until 1957 that all systems in Frankfurt were rebuilt.

In 1979 the last workshop for occupational therapy closed. From 1988, the company began to develop new professional fields for the blind and visually impaired. The first electronic daily newspaper for the blind was developed in cooperation with the Frankfurter Rundschau. In 2007 the foundation supervisory authority approved the new name of the foundation for the blind institution.

Artistic activities

The "open workshop" teaches how to use different materials, tools and working techniques. The foundation offers blind and visually impaired people their own musical development opportunities. These include elementary music promotion, instrumental lessons (piano, keyboard, bass, guitar and drums), a band project for blind and visually impaired young people as well as music with the PC with the music program "Sonar" (Midi). The “Blind Foundation” group performs professionally at galas and other events. Artistic activities (especially soapstone sculptures) are encouraged in Gallery 37.
