history

The Foundation for 19th Century Art was established in Olten in 1990. The collection consists of around 2000 items and includes paintings, drawings, prints, portfolios and illustrated books from the first half of the 19th century . Her focus is on Swiss and German Romanticism, and here in particular on the drawing art of the Nazarenes and the early romantic landscape representation. The collection also includes over a hundred works by Ludwig Vogel .

The collection donated by the lawyer and art historian Heinrich Thommen was initially in the Olten City Library, and later in the house where Martin Disteli was born . It is now housed on Froburgstrasse in Olten. The foundation's research projects, publications and exhibitions are often created in collaboration with the Olten Art Museum. In 2006 the foundation initiated a project to create a critical edition of the writings of the Nazarene artist Franz Pforr and in 2013 realized a large Miville exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Basel .
