A stigmator is a component predominantly found in electron microscopes , which serves to eliminate the axial astigmatism of the electron lenses used. In principle, it is an electrostatic or magnetic cylinder lens , variable in strength and direction , which corrects the imaging errors caused by manufacturing errors or contamination .

The stigmator was described by Otto Scherzer in 1936 and made it possible for the first time to achieve better images with the electron microscope than with the light microscope .
