Still Life with Jug and Pears (sometimes also known as " Still Life with Beer Mug and Fruit ") is a painting by an unknown artist of the 19th century, which for decades was attributed to the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890). It is dated to 1881 and was thus originally one of Van Gogh's early works.

The painting measures 44.5 × 57.5 cm and is painted with oil paints on canvas . It is owned by the Von der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal . It originally comes from the collection of the banker Eduard von der Heydt and was donated to the city after the Second World War.

description

The picture shows a still life with a beer mug around which fruit is grouped. The painter used dark colors for his picture. Black and brown tones determine the overall picture. The fuzzy contours that can be seen well on the pears are striking.

The authenticity of the painting

The authenticity of the painting and of another picture by Van Gogh was questioned as early as 1987 at an exhibition.

In May 2008, at the instigation of the museum director Gerhard Finckh, this painting and the painting Still Life with Coffee Pot and Flowers were given to the experts at the research institute of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam . The results of this investigation were presented to the press in October 2010. Thus, among other things, X-ray and pigment examinations were initiated during the assessment, the painting technique and the materials used were also examined. The conclusion of the experts was that neither painting is the work of Van Gogh.

However, the painting remains in the Von der Heydt Museum's depot; the press was not given any information about the financial loss in value.
