Image description

On a narrow stone slab, van der Hamen showed the objects in a wave arrangement and thus filled the flat space. On the right and left edges of the picture, glasses in the Venetian style limit the composition. On the left there is a carafe filled with aloja , a sugar water flavored with spices such as ginger , cinnamon and cloves with flies on it, and a glass. On the right side there are two glasses on a ceramic bowl. A terracotta honey pot is shown in the center of the picture in the background. To the right of him is a roll of waffles, so-called barquillos , which protrude over the stone slab and thus fix the depth of the room. To the right of the waffles is a green glass bowl with a foot on which pastries and candied fruit are arranged. At the beginning of the 17th century, such foods and drinks were typical at tea time in the upper classes of Madrid.

background

The format of the painting suggests that it was placed as an over- port . The picture is characterized by the depiction of Venetian glass , which was one of the most precious luxury goods at court and on which Juan van der Hamen demonstrated his skills. In addition, it has in common with other early still lifes van der Hamen that different types of vessels and plates are depicted. The picture shows glass vessels, a terracotta jug and a porcelain bowl.

Provenance

The provenance of the still life with sweets and glassware is not completely clear. In 1651 it belonged to the collection of Don Gaspar de Haro y Guzmán , Marqués de Eliche , together with other still lifes of Juan van der Hamens , who as Marqués del Carpio owned a very large art collection. In 1702 the painting was registered in the royal collection. Today the picture belongs to the collection of the Museo del Prado in Madrid .
