The vocal iron is used to voices of Lingualpfeifen . With careful strokes of the tool on the tuning crutch of the lingual whistle, the vibrating part of the tongue is lengthened or shortened, which changes the pitch .

Voice irons are made of steel or brass. Common lengths are 300 mm, 400 mm and 500 mm; the width is between 10 mm and 15 mm. One end of the iron is often hook-shaped in order to reach the tuning crutches of narrow pipes from above and to be able to pull them up (knocking).

In addition to tuning horns for labial pipes , a set of tuning irons (different lengths, different weights ( masses )) is part of the tuning tool of an organ builder or organist .
