The tuning horn is a typical professional tool of the organ builder .

description

The tuning horn is used to tune open metal labial pipes . With careful strokes of the tool on the upper, open end, the mouth of the pipe is bent inwards or outwards, which changes the pitch . The tuning horn is one of the organ builder's most important tools. Together with the tuning irons, it is one of the tuning tools.

The tuning horn is a rod-shaped special tool, usually made of pure brass , sometimes also of sheet iron , with a pointed cone at one end and a hollow cone ( funnel ) at the other end. The center of the stick can be covered with a wooden handle. A common tool set consists of three to four tuning horns with different cone and funnel widths and different overall lengths, since the size of the tuning horn to be used depends on the diameter of the pipe body of the pipe to be tuned.

use

All minor, up to 120 cm (four feet ) long open metal pipes, in which no tuning means ( vocal ring , voice roll ) is provided to be tuned with tuning horns. Such pipes are cut exactly to their length, determined by the intended pitch, but have to be fine-tuned with a tuning horn - and this again and again at regular intervals. The cone (head part) serves to widen the mouth of the organ pipe ( rubbing in ), the funnel-shaped end (foot part) is used to narrow the mouth ( rubbing in ). The balance between the head and foot sections allows the tuning horn to be turned quickly when tuning.

When rubbing out , the cone of the tuning horn is turned with moderate pressure on the mouth of the pipe. This bends the metal slightly outwards, making the pitch higher. With a comparable use of the funnel ( rubbing in ) the metal is bent inwards, the pitch becomes lower.

In order to be able to tune pipes that cannot be reached with the tuning horn, the organ builder uses a tuning horn hammer . It consists of a small tuning horn attached to a long stem.
