Voice swap is a term from music that plays a role especially in counterpoint theory . It refers to the change of a subject in a different voice , for example, from the upper part to the lower voice. The exchange of voices occurs particularly in the genres typical of the baroque such as invention , canon and fugue . However, it was also a popular processing medium in the Classical and Romantic periods .
