A tuning slide is an extendable tubular part on wind instruments . With brass instruments, the tuning slide is used to set the absolute tuning of the instrument. There are two options for the position of the tuning slide in the instrument:

  • The tuning slide is located between the mouthpiece and the beginning of the tube of the instrument.
  • The tuning slide, which is usually bent in a U-shape in this case, is located in the tube of the instrument between the mouthpiece and the bell (lintel), in instruments with a valve machine it is often between the mouthpiece and the valve machine.

To prevent the tuning slide from getting stuck, it must be cleaned and greased regularly.

On brass instruments, the tuning slide must not be confused with the trombone and slide trumpet slides or the intonation slides that are often found on valves equipped with valves.

Gaita transmontana, connection between the lower and middle drone section used as a tuning slide

In bagpipes , drones that consist of at least two sections are equipped with tuning slides, with the connections between the sections acting as tuning slides. The tuning slides serve to tune the drone to the chanter. In drones that consist of more than two sections, usually only the connection between the lowest and the following section is used as a tuning slide, while the connections between the upper sections are set relatively firmly. The connection of the drone sections provided as tuning slide is made by means of an appropriately adjusted winding . This winding must be serviced regularly and replaced if necessary in order to maintain its function.
