Scholarships in Switzerland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Switzerland, state subsidies or support funds for training and further education are known as grants . Conceptually, there is no difference to scholarships that are awarded by private institutions ( foundation , association and other funding organizations).

State Scholarship Offices

Each of the 26 Swiss cantons has its own scholarship office. Applications can only be submitted in the canton in which you have your residence under grant law. Each canton determines how one can acquire residence under the grant law. Each canton has also independently determined which training courses can be supported with how much scholarships. When submitting an application, the applicant's responsible scholarship office first checks whether the desired training or further education is eligible for a scholarship. If so, the finances are analyzed to determine if there is sufficient need. Some cantons also grant interest-free loans. A total of between 300 and 350 million francs in grants and loans are given annually by the public grant offices.

Private grant providers

There are around 13,000 charitable foundations in Switzerland. The most frequently mentioned areas of activity of these foundations are education and research, social affairs, culture and leisure. In the field of education, this money is sometimes used as scholarships. According to the Swiss scholarship platform stipendien.ch, it was CHF 750 million in 2012. According to the Swiss radio and television station SRF, donations continue to increase and expand the importance of private funding.
