Shock tone (Limburgish)

In the Limburg and Ripuarian languages , shock tone denotes one of the two tone accents that are typical for these languages . The vowel that carries it is emphasized (usually strongly) and its pitch drops uniformly as it sounds. The amount of pitch change varies from region to region.

To a lesser extent, the shock tone appears in Luxembourgish , in the neighboring Palatinate and Moselle Franconian , as well as in the Rhenish Regiolekt . He is otherwise unknown in the European language area.

In Dutch and Flemish literature this tone accent is referred to as stoottoon , in German also as "tone accent 1".

The second tone accent of the languages mentioned is the grinding tone , also called sleeptoon or "Rhenish sharpening".
