Obenfiger and Plotza mill

Five stock mills (locally called Fluttermühlen ) on the Kalserbach (Dorferbach) in the municipality of Kals am Großglockner , Lienz district , are referred to as stock mills on the Kalserbach , five of which are listed. They represent a unique ensemble of rural economic and technical history. Another stick mill is on the Teischnitzbach near the hamlet of Taurer. A seventh mill (Rogler) was completely washed away by a flood event in August 2018.

The mills were built along the stream and bear the Vulgo names of their owners, Pahl, Plotzer, Obenfiger, Kerer and Hofer / Uhl and Taurer. They represent the type of mills that were typical in East Tyrol between the 16th and 18th centuries and have a horizontal paddle wheel with a vertical wave tree, whereby the water power is transmitted directly to the millstone. The outbuildings were erected in a square frame and covered with a flat, board-covered gable roof. The water is supplied from the Mühlbachgerinne via wooden pendants.

The mills, which were built probably before the 18th century, covered the own needs of flour for individual farms or groups of farms. When in the second half of the 20th century many regions switched from arable farming to cattle breeding, the mills lost their function and fell into disrepair. Some mills were in operation until around 1964. In 1954 there were still over 50 mills in the municipality of Kals am Grossglockner, some of which were destroyed by the floods in 1966 . In order to stop the decline, a guest (Börstling) and a few people from Kals tried to keep the mills. From 1975, the renovation of individual mills was carried out by the owners together with the Kalser Mühlenverein. Today the six mills are fully functional and are occasionally used as foam mills for personal use and for tourist purposes. They can be viewed in operation in summer.
