Stock tower

The stock tower (Polish Wieża Więzienna = dungeon tower) was built at the beginning of the fourteenth century on the coal market as part of the fortifications of the right city of Danzig . With the Peinkammertor it formed the defense of the Langgasse.

The city architect Heinrich Ungeradin carried out the first increase . He built a tower with a passage and a rectangular courtyard next to the Langgasser Tor. The tower was further increased in 1379-1382 and 1416-1418. 1506–1509 Heinrich Hetzel built another storey with keel arch arcades . Michael Enkinger crowned the tower with a tent roof and slim corner turrets. The tent roof was burned during the siege of Danzig by the Polish King Stefan Báthory in 1577.

The stock tower was rebuilt around 1594 by Anton van Obberghen . When it lost its importance as part of the fortifications of Gdańsk in 1604, it was converted into a prison. The building houses the Amber Museum as a branch of the City History Museum of Gdansk.
