The company Stommel Haus GmbH (spelling: Stommel-Haus) manufactures, sells and builds solid wood houses in the one and two family house area. The medium-sized company is based in Neunkirchen-Seelscheid (North Rhine-Westphalia) and is run as a family business, with the fourth generation involved in the management. The focus of the nationwide sales area is around the company headquarters in western Germany.

history

The Stommel family has been associated with wood as a building material and material for generations. A family-owned wheelwright or carpenter's workshop is documented as early as the mid-19th century. In 1969, today's company director Franz Stommel, a trained master carpenter, took over the business from his father, who founded it in 1933 as a sawmill and carpenter's workshop. From the 1950s onwards it was purely a carpenter's workshop. In 1971 the company started to manufacture the first wooden houses. At that time it was predominantly weekend houses with an area of 50 to 60 square meters. This led to the construction of block of flats - and later of pre-element solid wood houses. "Since the company was founded [...] the former joinery [...] has developed into a leading company in solid wood house construction."

Location

The company headquarters of Stommel Haus GmbH is in Eischeid in North Rhine-Westphalia, a suburb of the district town of Neunkirchen-Seelscheid in the district of Siegburg near Bonn. In addition to the administration building, there is also the production hall for the prefabrication of the solid wood houses and the sales management in one of four model houses located here.

product

Stommel-Haus builds massive wooden houses, which are known as solid wood houses. The solid wood house combines the features of classic log house construction with those of modern prefabricated wood construction. The walls consist of double-shell logs with heat and sound insulation in between (core insulation). The wood comes from polar regions, where conifers grow slowly in sustainable forestry . "This so-called fine-grained wood with its narrow annual rings forms the basis for stability and minimal cracking." The timber is technically dried before processing. That means: It “goes into drying chambers, where it is brought to around 16 percent residual moisture in a complicated process.” Further processing takes place on a computer-controlled, state-of-the-art beam processing system; Logs up to 14 meters long and other types of wood can be sawed and milled with an accuracy of 0.2 millimeters. From this, the double log walls are prefabricated into complete wall elements - including door and window installation, pre-installations, etc. - in the principle of prefabricated wooden house pre-production in the hall. The element construction of the solid wood house allows the house planner "almost unlimited architectural designs". The wall and ceiling elements are assembled on the construction site with the help of a truck crane. Partner companies take care of the interior work through to the turnkey house. "These are mostly companies with which the timber constructor has been working for a long [...]

Solid wood house pioneer

Stommel-Haus is considered "one of the pioneers in the field of solid wood house construction". At the end of the 1970s, building owners became more interested in apartment blocks, “spurred on by the trend towards ecological and sustainable construction. The solid wood construction with its building physics-related> feel-good character <accommodated this ". Managing director Franz Stommel recognized "due to his advanced experience [in log and timber house construction] the opportunity to offer the solid wood house product while highlighting the special advantages of residential houses with individual, tailor-made planning". There was also a new appearance for the company on the market. The solid wood house product was presented as "Original Stommel House - The specialist for solid wood houses". Today the company's slogan is “A house like a tree”. The topic of solid wood houses became known to a broader public through the establishment of the German Solid Wood and Block House Association (DMBV) and its Gütegemeinschaft Blockhausbau eV (GB). Franz Stommel was one of the founders of the association and was chairman of this quality association for many years.

Wall construction

The Stommel solid wood house is built on a double-shell log external wall construction with a so-called core insulation in between. As a result, the solid wood house achieves a higher level of thermal insulation, which significantly exceeds the relevant technical DIN standards and other legal requirements such as those of the current energy saving regulation. The houses thus achieve the KfW efficiency house standard. "Such multi-layer wall panels made of two log shells with core insulation and installation level weigh up to three tons." That means: "Also in terms of soundproofing, solid wood and comparatively heavy insulation materials offer the best results." Because no foils are installed as vapor barriers or barriers the walls are open to vapor diffusion throughout. There is “no impregnation of any kind [...] and all wooden surfaces in the interior remain chemical-free.” In addition to log surfaces, wallpapered and / or painted gypsum fiber boards on the inside and plaster facades on the outside are also possible.

patent

“DE 42 01 659” is the official patent number for a wall system that Stommel-Haus had patented in 1995. "[...] The construction is open to vapor diffusion, settlement-free, particularly stable and has excellent heat, noise and electrosmog protection." According to its own statements, the company relied on double log walls with additional insulation at an early stage, long before the topics of thermal insulation , climate protection and sustainability in house construction gained their current importance. Since then, the company has continuously developed the so-called "energy saving wall". Today it is 38.5 centimeters thick, has a mass of around 100 kilograms per square meter and has a U-value of 0.16 W / (m² · K).

Proof of quality

Stommel-Haus GmbH has its product quality verified through several certification procedures :

  • The Ü mark proves compliance with the relevant rules of the building inspection standards catalog
  • The RAL quality criteria guarantee compliance with criteria that go far beyond the DIN and other building regulations.
  • The QDF seal of approval is awarded to prefabricated house manufacturers who, according to the association, provide above-average performance in house construction.
  • Blower door test (differential pressure measurement method): With this test, the legally prescribed tightness of the house shell can be proven and the required airtightness of a building can be proven. “At Stommel-Haus, every house that the manufacturer insulates is tested with this negative pressure test. The client receives the written result. "

Memberships

The company Stommel Haus GmbH is a full member of the Federal Association of German Prefabricated Buildings eV (BDF) and of the Quality Association of German Prefabricated Buildings eV (QDF).
