Berytinus crassipes is a bug from the family of stilt bugs (Berytidae).
features
The bugs are 4.3 to 5.8 millimeters long. Characteristic of representatives of the genus Berytinus , they have a short second antennae link that is shorter than the club on the first link. They also have short thighs ( femora ) on the hind legs that do not reach the tip of the corium of the hemielytrae . In Berytinus crassipes the club on the first antennae is black and the legs have black tips. In addition, the head and pronotum are roughly the same length.
distribution and habitat
The species is distributed from the northern edge of the Mediterranean to the south of Scandinavia and the south of the British Isles and east to Siberia and Central Asia. In Central Europe, the species is widespread, but not common. In Great Britain the species is locally distributed in large parts of England and Wales, but less common in the north. Dry, often sandy habitats with loose vegetation are settled.
Way of life
The animals live on and under carnation plants (Caryophyllaceae), especially on horn herbs ( Cerastium ). It is believed that they also feed on plants from other families. Mating takes place from April, the females lay their eggs individually on the stems, leaves or dead parts of the food plants from May through to summer. The adult animals of the new generation occur in August, at the same time but you can also imagines the old generation find.
