Landmark stork tower

The Storchenturm is a medieval gate tower of the former city fortifications in Zell am Harmersbach in the Black Forest and now houses a local museum .

history

The city fortifications originally had three gates and several towers, of which the stork tower was the highest at 25 meters. It was built around 1330. The gates were demolished in the 19th century. The remaining tower has a square floor plan and is built from rubble stones . Hewn stones are visible at the corners. A stone with an imperial eagle and a bell, the "poor sinners bell", were placed in the tower from the broken lower gate . The name of the tower comes from the storks that used to nest there . During renovation work in 1991, a base for a stork's nest was again attached to the roof.
