Store Koldewey ( German  "Groß Koldewey" ) is an island off the east coast of Greenland in the Greenland Sea . Administratively, it belonged to the province of Tunu / Østgrønland ("East Greenland") until the end of 2008 , and since 2009 to the municipality-free area of the Northeast Greenland National Park . It is named after Carl Koldewey , who explored the region as part of the Second German North Polar Expedition 1869-1870.

geography

The uninhabited island is located 10 km south of the Germanialand peninsula and forms the eastern border of the 50 km wide Dove Bay ( Dove Bugt ) interspersed with numerous islands . Store Koldewey is around 60 km away from Shannon Island in the south . The elongated island is 65 km long in north-south direction, but only a maximum of 10 km wide in east-west direction. It has an area of 615 km² and reaches a height of 971 m above sea level.

Upstream in the north-east and separated by Lille Bælt, which is only 1400 meters wide at its narrowest point , is the small double island of Lille Koldewey ( Klein Koldewey ).

history

At the end of August 1944, a German weather team led by meteorologist Gottfried Weiss (1911-?), Who was already with the Holzauge company , was on its way to the east coast of Greenland with the former fishing steamer Kehdingen . Shortly before landing on the island of Store Koldewey, the expedition was stopped by the icebreaker Northland of the American Coast Guard . The German escort boat U 703 shot down several torpedoes without hitting, however, and had to retreat. The crew of the Kehdingen sank their ship and went into captivity.
