A flow basin is an aquarium in which the water flows at a very high speed. The term is only used for freshwater aquariums , as saltwater aquariums generally have strong flow conditions.

Flow basins are used for the appropriate keeping of living beings, especially fish that occur naturally in fast flowing streams or even rapids. The types include for example the the cichlids belonging Grundelbuntbarsche that in the rapids of the lower Congo happen. Large public show aquariums, for example, also show brown trout in such tanks.

The flow in the pool is created by a powerful centrifugal pump having its outlet opening on one side of the aquarium, but its suction device is on the other side of the aquarium.
