Berwick tram

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Berwick tram in the US state of Pennsylvania ran from 1901 to 1926.

First, on October 4, 1901, the Columbia and Montour Electric Railway opened a standard-gauge interurban tram from Bloomsburg (Pennsylvania) to Berwick, which entered the urban area at Ber Vaughn Park and ran over the now-built western extension of Spring Garden Avenue and through this street itself . The train then went through Orchard Street and Front Street and ended at the intersection of Walnut Street and Front Street.

On December 22, 1905, local entrepreneurs founded the Berwick and Nescopeck Street Railway Company and the Berwick and Suburban Street Railway Company . B & NSR wanted to build a route from Berwick (Market Street / Front Street) to Nescopeck, Pennsylvania on the other side of the Susquehanna River , while B & SSR planned inner-city routes in Berwick. The following routes were planned:

  • a line from Market Street / Front Street through Market Street, 2nd Street, Lasalle Street to Freas Avenue
  • a line through Market Street to Summerhill Road
  • one line from Market Street / 2. Street through East 2nd Street, Fowler Street or Walnut Street, Front Street to the city limits
  • a line through Walnut Street, 10th Street, Chestnut Street and Summerhill Road to the intersection of Walnut Street
  • a line from 10th Street / Chestnut Street through Chestnut Street and 9th Street to the intersection of Oak Street
  • a link from the intersection of Chestnut Street and Duval Street through Duval Street, Pine Street, 15th Street to Market Street

Berwick & Nescopeck was supposed to run operations on the entire network. The first - and last - line was not opened until December 1910. It led from Oak Street / 2. Street through 2nd Street, Market Street and over the Susquehanna River to Nescopeck, where it reached its terminus at the Pennsylvania Railroad station on 3rd Street and Broad Street . All other planned routes were not built for financial reasons. The line was not profitable and was shut down again on October 4, 1924. The overland line to Bloomsburg survived for two more years before it was switched to bus service on June 26, 1926.

Another planned tram in Berwick was the Berwick and Nanticoke Street Railway Company , which wanted to build from the city limits on Front Street to Glen Lyon , where connection to the Nanticoke tram should exist. This project was not implemented either.
