The history of the Memphis tram can be divided into four epochs.

  • 19th century: Trains pulled by steam locomotives run in the streets of the city. Operators are several companies, including the Citizens Street Railroad, the City & Suburban Railway, the East End Street Railway and the Memphis & Raleigh Springs Railroad.
  • 1895 to 1947: The various operating companies are combined in the Memphis Street Railway Company and the lines are electrified. In 1911, the network reached its greatest extent of 77.5 miles.

  • 1948 to 1992: The tram is shut down and replaced by buses . Trolleybuses operate from 1931 to 1960 .
  • 1993 to 2014: The city of Memphis opens a tourist tram line with vintage vehicles in 1993 , the operation is placed in the hands of the municipal bus operator Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) . A second line followed in 1997 and a third line in 2004, the latter being less used for tourist purposes and more a real transport function for local public transport . As a result of two vehicle fires and the poor condition of many old construction vehicles, operations will cease in June 2014.
