The Oldenburg tram , which always ran as a horse-drawn tram and was never electrified, existed from 1884 to 1888 and was the city of Oldenburg's first public transport . It was operated by the transport company Oldenburger Pferdebahn AG .

The first two lines of the tram were opened on 16 May 1884 the chosen gauge was 1435 millimeters ( standard gauge ). The 4.7 kilometer network was single-track throughout . The east-west line led from the Centralbahnhof to the traffic jam and through the middle of the old town to the Zeughaus on Ofener Strasse. The north-south line ran from Donnerschweer Straße via horse market and castle to the Cäcilienbrücke . Another line ran from the Centralbahnhof to Donnerschweer Strasse. However, this was already discontinued on October 31, 1884. It had already been shortened before and ended at the horse market.

The wagons used had four wheels without a flange, a fifth wheel with a flange led the wagon on the rails . In the event of encounters, the fifth wheel was pulled up and the wagons avoided each other on the pavement. This procedure is called the perambulator system .

Because the railway urgently needed municipal subsidies to operate, which were not approved, the operating company ceased operations at the end of 1884, reopened it in 1887 and finally closed it in 1888. Rails and vehicles were sold, and the Schleswig tram was opened with them in 1890 .

In the early days of the First World War, there were considerations to set up another tram in Oldenburg, this time an electric one. However, this plan was rejected again as a result of the war and later because of inflation.
