Gilbert Rovère
Gilbert "Bibi" Rovère (born August 29, 1939 in Toulon , † March 13, 2007 in Menton ) was a French jazz musician ( double bass , violoncello ).
Rovère grew up in Nice, where he also attended the conservatory from 1954 . He became part of the local jazz scene and played at the San Remo Festival at the age of 17. In 1956 he moved to Paris, where he worked in the jazz clubs . In 1957 he recorded with Barney Wilen . In the next few years he accompanied Duke Ellington , Sonny Rollins , or Billie Holiday (with Mal Waldron ). Between 1962 and 1974 he was part of the combos of Martial Solal ( Son 66 ). 1962-63 he performed with Bud Powell , Kenny Drew , Johnny Griffin , Dexter Gordon and Kenny Clarke . 1964-65 he played with Art Simmons and Jean-Luc Ponty on his first album Jazz Long Playing . During this time he also worked with the Swingle Singers , René Thomas and briefly at Cannonball Adderley .
In 1974 he accompanied Al Haig on his album Invitation ; In 1978 he retired from musical life to become active eight years later, for example with Bud Shank and Jackie McLean . In 1990 he worked on Steve Grossman's album My Second Prime .
In 1966 he received the Prix Django Reinhardt .
