Skowhegan – Norridgewock tram

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The tram Skowhegan - Norridgewock was a Regional tramway in Maine ( United States ).

On August 28, 1894, the Skowhegan and Norridgewock Railway and Power Company was established to build an electric tram from the county town of Skowhegan at the terminus of the Brunswick – Skowhegan railway to the Norridgewock station along Norridgewock Avenue and River Road. The 9.25-kilometer standard-gauge line was completed at the beginning of October and went into operation on the 14th of the month. The two-track depot of the railway was in Norridgewock. In Skowhegan the tram crossed the railway line at the same level. In addition, there was a connection to the Skowhegan – Madison tram from 1896 .

On December 2, 1896, the railway company received the concession to build a connecting track to the railway in Skowhegan and an industrial connection to the Skowhegan Pulp Company , in order to transport goods from the railway to the factory. However, both connections were never built.

In 1898, the S&N opened a picnic area around the middle of the route, which was supposed to provide additional passengers. Nevertheless, the railway could never be operated economically. In the autumn of 1903, operations were "temporarily" closed. Attempts to found a new railway company to take over operations failed and the railway was officially shut down and dismantled in 1906. A closed, combined passenger and general cargo wagon and an open summer wagon were taken over by the Fairfield – Shawmut tram in 1907 .
