In Austria, the Prison Act (StVG) regulates the judicial execution of custodial sentences and the execution of measures (execution of sentences in special circumstances) in the prisons of the Federal Ministry of Justice, as well as compensation sentences ( rendering of charitable services , electronically monitored house arrest ). In this respect, the law passed on March 26, 1969 also applies to the execution of prison sentences on adolescents and young adults , as long as the Youth Courts Act 1988 (JGG) does not contradict this.

The most important change in the Prison Act was the Prison Adjustment Act. This was passed on July 11, 1974 and adapted the provisions of the StVG to the new penal code . The forms of detention, heavy dungeon , dungeon , strict arrest and arrest, were eliminated and were converted into criminal detention. The punitive form of induction into a workhouse was changed to placement in an institution for dangerous recidivists .

The most significant addition to the Prison Act can be seen in the Prison Act  (VZO), a decree of the Federal Ministry of Justice that came into force on December 22, 1995. The penal code defines the processes within the prisons, in particular their organizational structure , more precisely.
