Strategic Rail Authority

The Strategic Rail Authority ( SRA ) was an authority that oversaw rail transport in the UK , set the overall strategy and granted operating concessions. With the entry into force of the Railways Act 2005 , the SRA was dissolved and its tasks were transferred to the rail transport department of the Ministry of Transport.

The SRA was formed after the 1997 general election and the formation of a new government of the Labor Party . The aim was to enforce binding rules for the rail network that was split up after the privatization of British Rail . It was formally formed on the basis of the Transport Act 2000 on February 1, 2001, after having previously performed the duties of the Office of Passenger Rail Franchising . The SRA was under the supervision of the British Minister of Transport, in Scotland also the Scottish Minister of Transport, in Greater London also the Mayor of London .

After the dissolution of the SRA, its tasks were transferred to various bodies; the British Government, the infrastructure company Network Rail , the decentralized governments of Scotland and Wales and the Greater London Authority .
