Strobe is a TCP port scanner for Unix-like operating systems . It was programmed in C by Julian Assange and is distributed free of charge under self-formulated license conditions. Today it is of mainly historical importance. It was the first open source port scanner and known for its unmatched working speed.

Strobe tries to maximize bandwidth utilization and minimize local resource requirements. The internal structure of the software approximates a parallel finite automaton . In the non-linear multi-host mode, it tries to efficiently distribute bandwidth and sockets between the hosts. Furthermore, Strobe typically only queries a selection of interesting ports.

Strobe is not free software as the license prohibits the sale of the software.

history

Version 0.92 was the first version released and was released on February 27, 1995. Version 1.00 was reached on March 7, 1995. The last version (1.06) was published in 1999.

In Debian -based distributions, Strobe was included in the netdiag package , but was removed in 2012 because the exclusion of commercial distribution is inconsistent with the Debian Free Software Guidelines .
