The Stromboding waterfall (also known as Strumboding) is located in the upper reaches of the Steyr River in the Stodertal ( Hinterstoder municipality , Upper Austria).

General and history

The eleven meter high Stromboding waterfall (about three kilometers from the center of Hinterstoder ) plunges into the Stromboding, an epigenetic breakthrough of the Steyr between Steyrsberg and Kleinem Priel . The waterfall, which was a dangerous obstacle for the Trift on the Steyr, has long been known as a sight. Anton Johann Groß writes in his handbook for travelers through the Austrian monarchy (2nd edition 1834):

"This waterfall is not distinguished by its height, but it has the peculiarity that you can see a stream plunge into a cauldron and disappear into it, until the foaming waves emerge from the depths."

Alexander Julius Schindler (pseudonym: Julius von der Traun) describes him in Upper Austria in 1848 . A sketchbook :

“Below us the river roared, throwing its mass of water down many fathoms in an undivided stream. All around he has washed the rocks smooth so that they shine like reddish marble. There is no loose stone, no part of the earth, no little plant, all wave wrath. No bird flies here, no stag drinks here, the waves furiously stretch their white arms up and cannot seize any prey, and yet, in this place of danger, some of our confreres lead their professional path by daily. "

Sports

The Stromboding waterfall can be accessed when the water is low. The level of difficulty for kayakers is then WW 4+, at high tide it increases to over WW 6.
