Menhir Diarmaid's Pillar

The stone mound , the stone circle and the menhir ( English Standing Stone ) of Strontoiller are located east of Oban and north of the back road that connects Oban and Taynuilt , in Glen Lonan, in Argyll and Bute in Scotland . They are located 450 m south of the Strontoiller Farm next to a cattle fence .

description

The impressive standing stone is a column 3.8 m high. It bears the names "Clach na Carraig" and "Diarmaid's Pillar", the latter after Diarmuid , a figure in Irish mythology who is said to have died while hunting boars in the region ; Most of the variants of the story, however, place Diarmuid's death in the Irish Ben Bulben .

The immediately adjacent small Bronze Age cairn, which is known as the grave of the legendary figure Diarmuid , has a diameter of about 4.5 m and is set with originally 15, today still 12, irregular granite curb stones up to 1.3 m high . The mound contained small deposits of corpse burn. At the base of the curbs there were scattering of white quartz pebbles, which were part of the rituals associated with the construction of the monument.

About 180 m to the north is the 31 stone circle "Loch Nell" or "Clath Na Carra Stone Circle" with a diameter of about 20 m.
