The Studierendenwerk Hamburg (until 2005: Studentenwerk Hamburg) is one of 57 student unions in Germany. It looks after students in Hamburg with a wide range of offers and is a partner of various universities in the Hanseatic city.

history

In 1922 it was founded as a non-profit association by students and professors to support students in need. In 1933, when it was brought into line, the plant lost its independence and was incorporated into the Reichsstudentenwerk. Work could be resumed shortly after the end of the war.

In September 1969, Manfred Klee was appointed managing director of the board and held his office until 1975. Manfred Klee worked as managing director from January 1976 to August 2001. Jürgen Allemeyer has been the managing director of the Studierendenwerk since April 2007.

tasks

The Studierendenwerk Hamburg looks after 25 residential complexes for a total of around 4,350 students. In addition, 13 canteens and 23 cafés and café shops are operated. In addition to processing BAföG applications and advice on financial matters, the area of ​​responsibility also includes legal advice, pastoral care, psychological advice and other social services. The Studierendenwerk regularly awards the Hamburg Scholarship, the Fritz Prosiegel Scholarship and the Georg Panzram Book Money. The Studierendenwerk operates 5 kindergartens with a total of 370 places for students with children.

Upon request, the Hamburg Senate can transfer responsibility for other universities to the Studentenwerk.

Throughout Germany, the Studierendenwerk Hamburg is the central advice center for students who want to take advantage of BAföG for studying in the USA.

Social survey

In addition to the nationwide social survey of the German Student Union , which appears every two years, the student union determines in its own survey data on the economic and social situation of Hamburg students.
