Step tandem
A step tandem , also known as a combi-tandem or semi-recumbent , is a tandem with a recumbent seat position at the front and an upright seat position at the back. Compared to a conventional tandem, both drivers have a clear view to the front. Most step tandems are significantly shorter than conventional tandems. Step tandems have their origins in the rehabilitation sector , but are now also used in everyday life and on bike trips.
technology
In contrast to conventional tandems, they are steered from the rear seat, with handles for the driver in front usually being mounted under the seat.
In models with a front crankset equipped with a freewheel , the driver in front can pause pedaling while the helmsman continues to pedal. This makes this tandem design suitable for children, the disabled and the blind. A hand crank drive is offered for the recumbent seat for physically impaired passengers. With some custom-made models, the person in front steers, which requires a skilled helmsman.
Special step tandems are equipped with front-wheel drive so that each rider drives a wheel and has his own gearshift. One example is the Flevotandem stem, in which the entire drive, including crank and chain, also steers.
Manufacturers and models
Most step tandems are manufactured in small batches or are self-made. The most famous model in Europe is the Pino from Hase Spezialräder . Instead of the stoker, you can also take luggage with you by installing a suitable holder, which turns the Pino into a transport bike. The Dutch manufacturer Van Raam also produced a step tandem called Kivo. The captain sits at the back on a normal bicycle saddle , while the stoker sits at the front on a recumbent seat. Other models are the Morpheus from Circe, the Family Tandem from Performer and the Hi-Life from Velomo.
