Stuttgart friction meter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Stuttgart friction meter ( SRM for short ) is a test method for measuring the grip of road surfaces. The way it works is based on the principle of “defined locked wheel”. The measuring device consists of a unicycle trailer with a wheel load of 3.5 kN, which is pulled by a vehicle. The wheel in the trailer corresponds to the so-called European standard tire (PIARC tire) consisting of a profile of four longitudinal grooves.

For the measurement, the wheel is blocked while driving (with a water film thickness between 0.5 and 1 mm) and the resulting force is recorded. Alternatively, the measurement can also be carried out with a defined slip . If you then put the determined force in relation to the wheel load, the frictional resistance (grip) can be determined. Different speeds can be used for the measurement.
