Sub Loco Notes

Sub Loco Notes are certain notations of the Massorah that have been classified as problematic or special from a historical-critical biblical perspective. The biblical scholar Gérard E. Weil recognized these notations when developing and drafting the Massorah for the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (BHS) , an edition of the Masoretic text of the Hebrew Bible based on the Codex Leningradensis . He marked the relevant quotations of the Masora Parva as "Sub loco". Weil wanted to examine and publish these quotations, but that never happened. A study is now available from Mynatt, 1994.

When drafting his Massorah Gedolah, an edition of the Masora Magna of the Masoretic Text, Gérard Weil marked 226 entries as Sub Loco. Sub Loco states that the editors of the Massorah Gedolah under Gérard Weil either corrected an error in the Massorah Parva of the Codex Lenindgradensis or that no corresponding list in the Masora Magna of the Codex Lenindgradensis is appropriate for the respective Masoretic notation in the Masora Parva was found.

This notation lists every passage in the text where derי ( Adonai ) occurs without יהוה ( YHWH ).
There are 134 passages in the Codex Leningradensis , as well as in the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia .
The listing does not contain any errors. There are contradictions between the 134 passages in the text and various manuscripts and printed editions of the Masoretic Text of the Hebrew Bible . These result from the constant confusion caused by the pronunciation of יהוה (YHWH) as אֲדֹנָ֗י (Adonai).
According to Ginsburg , some of the best and early manuscripts read יהוה (YHWH) in many of the 134 passages instead of the אֲדֹנָ֗י (Adonai) shown in the Codex Leningradensis. This is due to the fact that 'since time immemorial, the Jewish rules have stated that the ineffable name of God יהוה (YHWH) should be read as אֲדֹנָ֗י (Adonai), as if אֲדֹנָ֗י (Adonai) were written instead of יהוה (YHWH)'. The early writers of the Hebrew Bible would have replaced the name יהוה (YHWH) in these places with אֲדֹנָ֗י (Adonai).
