Gérard Emmanuel Weil (* 1926 in Strasbourg , † October 1986 in Lyon ) was a French Hebraist and Bible scholar .

He was a professor at the University of Nancy 2 and later at the University of Lyon III , where he directed the Center d'analyse et de traitement automatique de la Bible (CATAB). His specialty was the study of the Masoretic text of the Hebrew Bible .

Gérard E. Weil was the editor of the Massorah, co-editor of the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (BHS) , an edition of the Masoretic text of the Hebrew Bible based on the Codex Leningradensis , which was published by the German Bible Society in Stuttgart from 1968-2013 .

During the development and elaboration of the Massorah, he marked certain notations of the Masora Parva with "Sub Loco". Since then, the relevant Masoretic notations have also been called Sub Loco Notes . Weil wanted to examine and publish these quotations, but that never happened. A study is now available from Mynatt, 1994.
