Suchitra Sebastian

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Suchitra Sebastian is a British solid state physicist and university reader at Cambridge University .

Life

Sebastian received a Master of Business Administration from the Indian Institute of Management in 1997. From 1997 to 2000 she worked as a management consultant for the Tata Strategic Management Group. She then studied physics at Stanford University in California ( USA ), where she received a Ph.D. received. In 2006 she moved to Cambridge University in England, where she held various positions in the physics department (Research Fellow, Royal Society University Research Fellow, Lecturer). Since 2017 she has been a University Reader in Physics there.

research

As a doctoral student, Sebastian mainly investigated the thermodynamic properties of quantum magnets. During her time at Cambridge she turned to high-temperature superconductivity and discovered a. a. through transport measurements under high magnetic fields in cuprate superconductors, a Fermi surface consisting of several components , which she traced back to a charge density wave. She later investigated the heavy fermion compound SmB 6 , which had previously been regarded as an insulator, but found evidence of a Fermi surface in transport measurements that is not expected in insulators. These results led to a re-evaluation of the electronic structure of this class of compounds.
