The Sulawesi cuscus ( Strigocuscus celebensis ) is a marsupial in the climbing bag family that occurs in two subspecies on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi . The nominate form , S. c. celebensis , lives in the center of Sulawesi, as well as on the south-east and on the south-west peninsula and on the island of Muna , S. c. feileri occurs on the northern peninsula.

Sulawesi cuscus reach a head-trunk length of about 30 to 38 cm, the tail is 31 to 37 cm long and the animals can reach a weight of 0.5 to 1 kg. This makes the animals the smallest climbing bag. The soft, woolly fur is gray-brown on the back, without back stripes, and whitish on the belly. The head is small, the muzzle is short. In the upper jaw, a clear diastema separates the incisors from the canines.

Habitat and way of life

The Sulawesi cuscus occurs in primary and secondary forests up to heights of 2000  m above sea level. NN before. It is nocturnal and, above all, arboreal. He feeds mainly on fruits. Bird eggs are also eaten, among other things. The animals are often seen in pairs. Little is known about the reproductive behavior and the rest of the behavior. Sulawesi cuscus are captured by the Sulawesi roller ( Macrogalidia musschenbroekii ) , among others .

status

The IUCN estimates the existence of the Sulawesi cuscus as endangered (Vulnerable). The species is mainly threatened by deforestation. Indonesia has placed the species under conservation. It is not known whether it also occurs in protected areas.
