Active Sulfur Holes in Sulfur Springs

Sulfur Springs is a tourist attraction in the Soufrière , St. Lucia area . The sulfur deposits also gave the place Soufrière ( French = sulfur pit) its name. Sulfur was mined there in the 19th century.

Sulfur Springs was a formerly active lava dome that was formed around 40,000 years ago. It was created in the field of Qualibou - Caldera . The last eruption occurred in 1780. The cathedral collapsed a long time ago and has formed a 2.8 hectare caldera. Although there has been no eruption for 200 years, sulfur fumes are still being released. There are also some boiling mud holes. Sulfur Springs is the only drive-in volcano in the world.
