Sumcupa or Thirty Verses ( Tib. Sum cu pa ) is the earliest and still fundamental Tibetan work on the grammar of Tibetan . It is a verse treatise on Tibetan grammar by Thonmi Sambhota ( thon mi sam bho ta ). Its full Tibetan title is lung ston pa rtsa ba sum cu pa .
It is the first of Thonmi Sambhota's eight treatises dealing with Tibetan grammar and language. It deals with the basics of the grammar system by first defining letters, vowels and consonants of the Tibetan writing system and then the way in which letters are written together to form words. It provides important material on the morphology and phonology of Tibetan.
Of Thonmi Sambhota's original eight treatises, only these and his rtags kyi 'jug pa (Tib. Lung du ston pa rtags kyi' jug pa ) have survived .
The other six were destroyed by King Langdarma in the tenth century AD. Both treatises were written around the year 650 AD.
