Sumitomo Drive Technologies is a trademark of Sumitomo Heavy Industries .

The origins of Sumitomo Drive Technologies go back to 1911 when Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. begins the development and construction of a 3.7 kW electric drive for the Besshi copper mine . At the end of the 1930s, a cooperation with the German CYCLO Getriebebau Lorenz Braren KG was agreed. In 1939 the first cyclo drives are produced under license in Japan. In 1964, the Sumitomo group of companies takes over Cyclo-Getriebebau GmbH (today: Sumitomo Cyclo Drive Germany GmbH) and thus lays the foundation for a steadily growing presence in Europe. In 2003, Sumitomo Heavy Industries finally bundled the extensive drive technology business area under the Sumitomo Drive Technologies brand.

In Europe, the company has Cyclo-Centers in France , Italy , the Netherlands , Sweden , Spain and the United Kingdom as well as numerous other sales offices. In addition to the production facility in Markt Indersdorf near Munich, there is a plant in Kingston upon Hull, England .
