Sumitomo Kinzoku Kōgyō KK ( Japanese 住友 金属 工業 株式会社 , Sumitomo Kinzoku Kōgyō kabushiki kaisha , short: Sumikin ( 住 金 ), English Sumitomo Metal Industries Ltd. ) was a Japanese company with headquarters in Ōsaka . Sumitomo Metal Industries Ltd. is one of 37 companies in the Sumitomo Group (see Sumitomo Group ).
The company was active in mining and was founded in 1897. On October 1, 2012, it merged with Shin-Nippon Seitetsu (Nippon Steel) to form Shinnittetsu Sumikin (Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal).
Main fields of activity
Sumitomo Metal Industries had 25 subsidiaries worldwide with a 100% stake, 23 with a majority stake of over 50% and 26 with a stake of less than 50%. Most recently, Vallourec (61%) & Sumitomo (39%) built Tubos do Brasil, a pipe plant with a capacity of 600,000 tons in Brazil.

The Japanese subsidiary Sumitomo Sitix was combined with the silicon division of Mitsubishi . This resulted in the Japanese company SUMCO (Sumitomo Mitsubishi), the second largest manufacturer of silicon wafers after Shin-Etsu .
