Summorum Pontificum is the name of the Apostolic Constitution with which Pope Pius XI. On July 25, 1922, St. Ignatius of Loyola was named the patron saint of the Spiritual Exercises .

Pope Pius XI declared with this Apostolic Constitution, according to which he had honored the life and work of St. Ignatius of Loyola, as the patron saint of all spiritual retreats and spiritual exercises. He particularly emphasized the book of exercises written by Ignatius and professed his "methods", "which would help believers to hate sin and to shape their lives according to the model of Jesus Christ ". Pius XI. also mentioned his predecessor Leo XIII. (1878–1903) who called the “ Ignatian method ” a high value, as ascetic training and the right way to the sanctity of life.

In his remarks, Pius XI. also refers to the Saints Francis de Sales and Charles Borromeo , he reminds that these persons had prepared themselves with Ignatian exercises for their spiritual path. In his constitution, the Pope also addresses the rules of the retreat and emphasizes that learning the rules and exercising the retreat should be part of the formation of priests.

The papal declaration concludes that he appoints St. Ignatius, in honor of the third century celebration of his canonization and in the name of the Lord, as patron of all exercises for the entire Catholic Church of both rites . At the same time he instructs all institutes of consecrated life , sodalities and groups to practice the retreat according to the rules of St. Ignatius.
