history
The first predecessor bank was Farmers Bank of Alexandria , Virginia, founded in 1811. The Sun Trust Banks was founded in 1985 from the merger of the two banks Trust Company of Georgia and Sunbanks from Florida. In 1986, shortly after the merger, Bank Third National Corporation was acquired and in 1998 Crestar Financial of Virginia was bought. In 2004, SunTrust Banks acquired the Memphis-based finance company National Commerce Financial .
In February 2019 it is announced that SunTrust Banks will merge with the US bank BB&T .
Others
SunTrust Banks has a history of close ties with the Atlanta-based Coca Cola Company . It propped her up in 1919 when she went public and bought a portion of her stock.
