Sunisa Lee (born March 9, 2003 in Saint Paul , Minnesota ) is an American gymnast.

Athletic career

Lee started gymnastics at the age of 6. Since 2016 she has been doing elite gymnastics with the juniors. In 2019 she competed in her first professional elite competition. She made her debut at the City of Jesolo Trophy in Italy and won the all-around at this international tournament. At the national championships she was second in the all-around competition, beaten only by Simone Biles , she also won gold on the uneven bars and bronze on the floor. Because they are also in the preliminary competitions for the world championships in Stuttgartas second in the all-around event, only 0.350 points behind Biles, she was nominated for the US team. She was the only gymnast in her first year as a professional and the only one with no prior world championship experience who made the leap into the team. At the world championships itself, she was able to meet expectations: She won gold with the team, silver on the floor and bronze on the uneven bars. In the all-around competition she missed another possible medal because of a fall on the uneven bars. In qualifying, she was second behind Biles and made her a favorite. She eventually finished eighth.

Private life

Lee was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Her parents come from the Hmong people who fled to the United States during the Vietnam War. She has five siblings. She is currently attending Saint Paul High School, which she is expected to graduate in 2021.
