Sunita Narain

Sunita Narain is an Indian publicist and environmentalist . She is the director of the Center for Science and Environment (CSE) and is the editor of Down To Earth magazine .

Live and act

In 1982, Narain joined the CSE. Together with its founder Anil Agarwal, she researched the “Citizens' Report on the State of the Environment in India”, the haunting results of which caused a sensation worldwide. After Agarwal's death in 2002, Narain succeeded him as head of the CSE.

Narain's research focuses on the interface between food and the environment. In her work, she deals with how the environment can become the basis for securing the livelihood of the people of India. In doing so, she links the questions of local democracy with global democracy and argues that everyone has a right to the common global atmosphere. She is committed to avoiding the use of chemicals in agriculture in the global south. As part of her work on the climate crisis , she is committed to a Green New Deal .

The US American Time magazine listed her in the article “Meet 15 Women Leading the Fight Against Climate Change” in 2019 as one of 15 women who lead the fight against climate change.
