The Sunnfjord Museum is an open-air museum in Movika 9 km east of the center of Førde ( Fylke Vestland in Norway ). The museum is located on a hill directly on Lake Motvatnet. The main building of the museum, preserved in situ, shows the farmstead of a tenant and his everyday life in the period around 1850. More than 20 buildings transferred to the museum come from different parts of the Sunnfjord region and show building techniques of regional traditions from the 16th to the 19th century. Century. In addition to the open-air section, there is a visitor center with exhibitions from the Middle Ages to the present day.
history
The Sunnfjord Museum, like many of the Norwegian folklore museums, was founded in the early 1900s; it thus coincides with the establishment of the independent Norwegian state in 1905.
The driving force was the historical association Sunnfjord Sogelag . Their goal of opening a museum about the Sunnfjord villages was not realized until 1929 at the Førde sentrum . In 1950 the museum was moved to Mivka, its current location. This is an ideal place as the museum buildings blend in nicely with the landscape.
The following years were marked by a lack of money and the future of the museum was not assured. From 1975 onwards, the museum received some financial support from the state. This enabled an administration and exhibition building completed in 1980 to be built and the first permanent employee to be hired in 1977. A workshop building has also existed since the mid-1980s. Soon after 2000, several houses could be converted into the museum. Furthermore, part of the surrounding forest was cleared to create a cultural landscape.
Since 2009, the museum has been part of the Musea i Sogn og Fjordane together with four other museums .
