The Sunwapta Falls is a waterfall on the Sunwapta River (a tributary of the Athabasca River ) in Jasper National Park in the Canadian province of Alberta . It is about 55 km south of Jasper .

The waterfall is accessible via the Icefields Parkway (Highway 93) on paved roads. It is around 18 meters high and around nine meters wide. The water of the Sunwapta River comes from the Athabasca Glacier and falls here in two stages. A hiking trail of about two kilometers leads to the Lower Falls .
Surname
The name Sunwapta is a term used by the indigenous indigenous people and means something like wild water . In late spring, when the snow has melted on the peaks, the waterfall shows the greatest turbulence.
