As a super deformed ( Engl. Dt. Excessively distorted ), often called SD abbreviated, a special form which is Japanese cartoon called, are drawn to the characters in extremely distorted way. The body parts that are important for the effect are enlarged disproportionately. The corresponding figure is therefore depicted in an unrealistic manner in order to increase the comic effect.

This type of representation can be found in many comics and animated cartoons. However, the term is understood as a stylistic element of manga and anime , with which exaggerated emotions or reactions are represented. Super Deformed is therefore used particularly often in humorous scenes.

Differentiation from Chibi

Chibi refers to a certain stature of a figure rather than a drawing style. Nevertheless, the two terms in the current are Manga / Anime - jargon partly synonymously used.
