In 2001, the World Automobile Federation ( FIA ) founded the Super Racing Weekend series of events : ten weekends on ten different racetracks with 3 racing series: FIA GT ( sports car ), FIA ETCC ( touring car ) and the Formula Renault V6 ( formula car ).

All races of the three series were broadcast live on Saturday and Sunday on Eurosport .

The FIA GT sports car series was founded in 1996. There are two classes: GT and GT-N for near-series cars with fewer modifications. All vehicles must be built as a series model and must not have any electronic aids such as ABS or ESP .

The FIA ETCC ( European Touring Car Championship ) (ETCC, since 2005 FIA WTCC ) was founded in 2001 at the same time as the SRW and has been following the FIA Super 2000 rules since then , which are based on Group N from the FIA regulations . In order to keep costs down, the engine speed is limited and all-wheel drive is not allowed. All participants ride with standard tires.

The Formula Renault V6 is a newcomer series with 380 hp formula cars, comparable to the Formula 3000 . The series is very popular, with numerous drivers receiving test offers from Formula 1 teams after the season . In 2004, carbon fiber brakes were used for the first time as in the F1.

In 2006 the Super Racing Weekend broke up. The three racing series now have their own calendar of events after a dispute arose between those responsible for the FIA WTCC and the FIA GT .
