Bonbin Surabaya

The American black bear in the Surabaya Zoo in Indonesia suffers from skin diseases that tend to occur when it is not kept in a species-appropriate manner. Clearly recognizable by the sore spots on the paws.

Bonbin Surabaya , also known as Kebun Binatang Surabaya (KBS) , Surabaya Zoo , or just Bonbin , is a 15 hectare zoo in the city of Surabaya in Java , Indonesia .

Founded on August 31, 1916 by decree of the Governor General of the Dutch East India Company , KBS is one of the most famous zoos in Southeast Asia and a major tourist attraction in Surabaya . Only the zoo is owned by the city, while the livestock is owned by numerous private owners. The number of visitors in 2005 was around one million, in 2011 two million should have been reached.

Balistar

As in many other zoos, the endangered Jalak Bali ( Balistar ), which is only native to the western part of the island of Bali, is bred in Bonbin Surabaya . Due to the success of the breeding program, 40 Balistars were released into the wilderness of the Bali Barat National Park in June 2011 .

criticism

The Surabaya Zoo is often criticized by various activist groups such as the Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN) for the way its animals are kept and treated, but zoo employees also complain about the conditions.

An investigation in 2002 on behalf of the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) and the KSBK Animal Conservation for Life criticized the conditions in the zoo and pointed in particular to the inadequate training and education of those responsible and carers.

In 2009, an attempt was made to change the management of the zoo, which was followed by a lawsuit lasting several years. In 2010 the state took over the zoo. The interim management set up by the government fired numerous long-time zookeepers and replaced them with seasonal workers, followed by high staff turnover. Conditions went so far that in June 2010 the Jakarta Post newspaper dubbed the facility the "Zoo of Death." In August 2010, the Landscape Department revoked the zoo's license after a number of animals perished, including rare specimens such as a Sumatran tiger , wallaby , Komodo dragon , young boar , Bawean deer and crocodiles . Investigations by the local police and the East Java Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) revealed that in most cases the inactivity of the responsible caretakers was responsible for the death of the animals.

In mid-2013 the zoo was taken over by the city administration. A petition has been circulating since the end of 2013 calling for the zoo to be closed due to documented animal abuse. The transition management team has so far handed over 378 animals from the zoo to six protection organizations, but many animals were in such bad shape that they ultimately died, with some pieces of plastic and wood found in their bodies.

On January 28, 2014, Surabaya Zoo management announced that the zoo had a collection of 3,459 animals from 197 species, with 81 sick, injured or old and 44 in poor condition.
