Survey of India is the national geodesy and cartography agency of India . Its head office is in Dehradun , Uttarakhand , and sub-departments are spread across India. The agency, headed by the Surveyor General of India, reports to the Department of Science & Technology of the Ministry of Science and Technology (Ministry of Science and Research).

The tasks not only include the geodetic, topographical and cartographical activities of a nationally competent authority including the creation of digital maps, but also the spelling of place names, the tide forecast including the publication of tide tables for 44 ports and, last but not least, the determination of the country's outer borders , their correct representation in the maps and the monitoring of the boundary representation in other maps, including those of commercial manufacturers.

The organization was founded in 1767 under the British East India Company , making it the government of India's oldest scientific institution. Its outstanding services include the Great Trigonometrical Survey , the Great Trigonometric Survey , the Indian subcontinent was measured with the 19th century.
